The Apple Tree – 1966 Original Broadway Musical CD
February 10th, 2010 by admin

Using such source materials as The Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain and "The Lady or the Tiger" by Frank R. Stockton, The Apple Tree is an interesting Broadway Musical from 1966. The music was by Jerry Bock, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. The musical was directed by Mike Nichols and starred Barbara Harris, Alan Alda, and Larry Blyden.

This is a wonderful addition to anyone who is interested in 1960's musicals. The Apple Tree won one Tony and was nominated for several others.

According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It’s composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, “The Lady or the Tiger?” contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, “Passionella”, contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as “three moldy figs”. I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first “The Diary of Adam and Eve” is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. “Lady and Tiger” is short and boring. And “Passionella” is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and “The Diary of Adam and Eve” is nice. Favorite Song: “Its A Fish”

THE APPLE TREE earned Barbara Harris a well-deserved Tony Award, and also featured acclaimed turns by Alan Alda and Larry Blyden (FLOWER DRUM SONG). The score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, SHE LOVES ME) is a real delight.

Barbara Harris, who had charmed Broadway audiences the previous year in ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER, proved that lightning can strike twice with this ambitious musical, essentially three mini-musicals broken up by Intermission’s.

The three musicals are ‘The Diary of Adam and Eve’, ‘The Lady or the Tiger?’, and ‘Passionella’, the latter of which is generally regarded as the best of the three, and the main reason why Harris snagged the Tony. ‘Passionella’ is a unique spin on the Cinderella story. It concerns Ella, a chimney sweep who wishes to be a movie star. In probably the score’s best-known song, Ella fantasises about being “A Movie Star”, preferably one that is “Gorgeous”.

Other great songs in the score include “Here in Eden”, “Forbidden Love”, “Eve”, “I’ve Got What You Want” and “What Makes Me Love Him?”.

    Highly-recommended. [SONY SK 48209]

I have known this album for many years, so it really is an old favourite. It pays to revisit it from time to time and enjoy a real, original musical score. The added bonus is to have the much underrated Barbara Harris, here at the top of her game. She was the original lead in “On a Clear Day” on Broadway and when that film was made the role sadly went to Barbra Streisand and the musical became something else altogether. Shame!!

Alan Alda, of “Mash” fame also excellent. But most of all relish this wonderful score executed with great humour.
